Date & Time: Jan 12th to Jan 19th (real time), July 11th to July 18th (historical time), 1884
Location: Black Rock, New Mexico, USA
Characters: All transports
Summary: Fearing UE reprisal, the Initiative corrals all transports and shoos them onto a mission back to the Wild West, to vote Gerald "Moony" Jackson in as Mayor of Black Rock. Transports are encouraged to used all their wiles to encourage townsfolk to vote in favor of him, too. Other than that, they're free to roam as they will for 7 whole days! Good luck finding food and shelter, masses. (See the OOC post for more information.)

The Initiative had been terse and rushed as they gathered the transports into the Transporter room, and anyone unwilling to participate will have been forcibly hurried along. The Initiative employees had seemed distracted and worried, and unwilling to stand around and debate. It was time to move. The teleportation had gone off without a hitch, and a roomful of transports have been treated, quite suddenly, to a broad and sunny blue sky, and especially to the heat of mid July in the American West.

Enjoy your weeklong stay in Black Rock, New Mexico! The town is small and sleepy, with just 3 good saloons and one questionable (but considerably cheaper) one. There are a few inns, but these inns aren't quite prepared to room a sudden influx of over 300 travelers, and some people might have to bunk up or get creative with their sleeping arrangements. If you sleep in an inn at all, of course. There's plenty of unexplored wilderness out there to sleep in instead, isn't there? Just make sure to check your boots for scorpions in the morning.

The only instructions are "vote for Gerald "Moony" Jackson for Mayor, and try to convince others to do the same", and you've been given just enough money to cover a very sparse room and board for 7 days, if you don't spend it in anything else.

( Sakura smiles, shoulders relaxing as she looks back out at the dusty road. )

Hot. Pretty much like everyone else.

( Only with her legs covered for once, trying to mitigate some of the inevitable heat they generated under the relentless sun. )

Want some tea? I'll ask them to bring you a glass.

Is it halfway decent?

( The question's rhetorical in the end; Sakura nods. )

That'd be nice, thank you.

[Rin tosses the jacket she was working on over the railing in front and retreats into the house for a minute. She returns with a glass of chilled tea which is offered to Sakura.]

Where are you staying?

Upstairs at the saloon. It's surprisingly quieter than I expected.

( She's not bothered by people being people, or what they'll do when drunk, horny, or a combination of the two. )

As far as I can tell, they think I'm a young man visiting from out of town. Effective devices the Initiative equipped us with.

( Taking the tea; )

You're welcome. [Sitting back down, she jerks at the new seam she put in and, satisfied at its security, carries on with her sewing. She lets the silence stretch a little on purpose.]

( Sakura settles back, holding the tea between both hands. She doesn't drink at first, instead tipping her head back and looking off into the sky.

When she does speak, it's on nothing in particular, a shared half-musing that comes out of the depths of memory. )

The last time I was in a desert town like this, everyone I knew was being haunted. Literally haunted.

( She smiles to herself. )

Haunted by what were holograms and hallucinations, as it turns out.

[Rin works away. She's not in any hurry. The meticulous work is menial but... soothing somehow.]

What world was that in?

None at all.

( Which is more than she's said on the Facilities... ever. )

[A sideways look, at that. She's not sure if it's an answer or an evasion or - maybe both, but she'll let it slide.]

I'm okay with it... it's hot but that's okay. I think cold is almost worse...

You can defend against the cold.

( But still... she shrugs. )

Cold's probably worse for me anymore.

Yeah, we could defend against heat too... even if it's harder in this time, I guess.

We could hire guys to stand around fanning us with palm fronds.

( She suggests, lips twisting up into a grin. )

Find some palm fronds, and I'll pitch in to do that. We could fan each other.

I can probably pull something together from the local foliage. That, or find actual fans down at the general store.

[Haha Rin stares for a second. Is this a thing that's really happening?]

Oh, if you want... I guess actual fans would be easy...

( Sakura looks over at her from the corner of her eyes. )

If they're affordable. Or if we take to thieving.

( Sakura's not personally a fan. )

If you want. [Rin's smile is small, but honest. She looks back down at her sewing.]

Sakura, what do you want from me?

( She thinks for a while, considering what it is she does want from Rin. In the end, she decides to be honest. )

I don't know.

Madara's the reason we met in the first place. He's not even here.

Something I'm thankful for.

( She frowns, looking down at her hands. )

He was never why I continued to talk to you. He's not why I want to talk to you know. Dead men make for poor motivators.

Do you want to be friends or something?

I'd like to have the chance, over time.

I see. [She kind of wonders why. Rin doesn't see a lot about herself that makes ideal friend material, so this is always weird.

... Seems like she has nothing else to say to that anyway. Bending over the jacket in forced focus.]

( Something in the display makes Sakura smile. She has no justifications for why; just feelings. She figures that's all she really needs. Naruto was that strength, in finding in everyone a reason for them to be made a friend.

She has always seen something in that to be admired.

Lifting the cup to her lips, she takes a sip of the tea. It's gone tepid, but the liquid soothes her dusty, dry throat.
